The OnePlus Foldable Could Be the Competitor Samsung and Google Need

More competition implies that consumers will have more options. Additionally, the device may offer OnePlus an opportunity to reclaim its status as the “flagship killer.”

The year ahead seems to be a significant one for foldable phones. Google and Motorola have already introduced new products with flexible screens, and Samsung’s new Flip and Fold phones are most likely not far behind. However, OnePlus will also be a newcomer to the foldable phone market in 2023.

OnePlus stated in February that it would launch its first foldable phone in the second half of this year. Since many IT businesses typically announce new products in the late summer or early fall, even though we haven’t heard any updates since then, it’s probable that more information will soon be available.

There are a few reasons why I’m excited for OnePlus’s foldable phone, even if the company hasn’t yet provided any information about it. OnePlus is known for producing devices that are visually appealing, have strong hardware, and cost less than its competitors. Additionally, there are more options for consumers as there is greater competition in the foldable phone market.

OnePlus is known for value

The fact that OnePlus established its reputation by releasing phones with high-quality hardware at competitive pricing is the main reason I’m interested in the company’s first foldable phone. OnePlus’s debut handset, which featured a large, 5.5-inch screen and a quick processor for hundreds of dollars less than Samsung’s and HTC’s offerings at the time, thrilled Android lovers back in 2014.

The OnePlus 11 5G was a return to form for a firm that was once referred to as the “flagship killer,” despite the fact that in recent years the company’s phones have edged closer in price to those made by competitors like Samsung and Google. The OnePlus 11 5G was commended by CNET’s Andrew Lanxon in his review earlier this year for its speedy charging, potent performance, sleek appearance, and five years of security software support — all for $699, making it less expensive than the base-model Samsung Galaxy S23, which costs $800.

Google, which aggressively priced its Pixel phones to compete with Samsung, presents OnePlus with fresh competition, making it more difficult for the company to distinguish apart. But with foldable phones, OnePlus has a chance to further restore its reputation. Even if Apple and Samsung rivals Samsung and Apple have more affordable basic Pixel phones, Google’s foldable phone still has an eye-watering $1,800 starting price. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Motorola Razr Plus both start at around $1,000, making flip phone-style foldables still more expensive than the majority of nonfolding phones.

Unconfirmed reports from well-connected tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer (aka OnLeaks), which were posted on the blog SmartPrix, indicate that OnePlus will either produce a flip phone or a foldable book-style gadget. Whatever strategy OnePlus chooses, I hope to see a phone that is more approachable than the options on the market right now.

Foldable phones need more competition

According to Counterpoint Research, Samsung currently leads the foldable phone industry with 62% of the market in the first half of 2022. Samsung has a head start on newcomers like Google because it was one of the first major phone manufacturers to introduce a foldable phone in 2019. But more variety is always a good thing, which is why I’m excited for OnePlus to enter the market.

OnePlus’ phone might influence manufacturers like Samsung and Motorola to improve their designs, add additional features, or, most significantly, cut their prices, whether or not it proves to be a success. This frequently occurs in other facets of the smartphone market, particularly when it comes to more specialized products. After Google’s similarly cost Pixel 6A was warmly welcomed last year, Samsung, for instance, added luxury features to its budget-friendly Galaxy A54, such as a high refresh rate, a refined appearance, and a large battery.

Another foldable phone in development might also lead to a rise in the availability of the specialized parts needed for these gadgets. If that occurs and the manufacturing process is made simpler, maybe we’ll start to see foldable phones at more affordable prices.

OnePlus may offer a bigger screen than Samsung and Google

Undoubtedly, the most significant feature of a foldable phone is the screen. After all, your phone may become a tablet or have a built-in “tripod” for capturing selfies thanks to its bending display. The cover and internal screens of OnePlus’ foldable may be larger than what we’ve seen from Samsung and Google thus far, if a report is accurate.

But it’s crucial to keep in mind that size isn’t everything. I prefer the Pixel Fold’s broader design since apps feel more natural there, even though it has a smaller cover screen than the Galaxy Z Fold 4.

At its next Unpacked event on July 26, Samsung is anticipated to unveil updated models of the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip that may solve some of the shortcomings of its current foldable devices.

All things considered, OnePlus’ arrival into the market is another indication that phone manufacturers believe foldable smartphones will be the future of the smartphone. But for them to become as commonplace as the smartphones used today, lower pricing, better software features, and more robust designs are required. Any corporation would have a difficult time completing that task on its own. But the industry is likely to get closer to fulfilling those requests as more businesses like OnePlus enter the foldable arena.
