At Samsung’s Unpacked event last week, the firm unveiled the new Galaxy Z Flip 5, which has design updates like a bigger cover screen and a new hinge. The Motorola Razr Plus and the Oppo Find N2 Flip, which both employ a flip-phone design with larger cover screens of their own, are competitors for the upcoming Z Flip 5.

With the exception of a camera bump cutout, the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s front panel is mostly covered by a new cover screen. Samsung has abandoned the Z Flip 4’s relatively small screen, which was just 1.9 inches compared to the Z Flip 5’s 3.4 inches. With this modification, you can access some widgets and apps without opening the phone, and it is big enough to fit a full keyboard so you can quickly send a text.

Samsung adopts a more curated approach by only allowing apps and widgets that are optimized for usage on its smaller screen, in contrast to the Razr Plus, which lets practically any Android program be used on its cover screen. YouTube and messaging apps like WhatsApp are some of the approved applications. Only when the Z Flip 5 is unfolded can other apps be utilized. Whichever method you favor will probably depend on your personal preferences, but later this year, more apps might find their way to the Z Flip 5’s cover screen.

Unlike its flip phone rivals, Oppo’s Find N2 Flip phone has a vertically-oriented cover screen.

The Oppo Find N2 Flip is the only one of the trio to have a tall cover screen that is angled vertically. When I had the chance to test Oppo’s flip phone in February, I discovered that its cover screen was practical for quickly checking the weather and reading notifications without having to unlock the phone. The Find N2 Flip has less capability than its competitors due to a narrower widget selection and a complete lack of app compatibility.

The main differences between these three flip phones, aside from cover screen functionality, are in terms of longevity, processing, and software upgrades.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 has an IPX8 grade for water resistance, which means it can endure immersion in water for 30 minutes at a depth of up to 1.5 meters (about 5 feet). Even while that is amazing, it is not dust-resistant. Samsung claims that the Z Flip 5’s hinge contains small brushes that should help remove dust particles in response to this issue.

In contrast, the Razr Plus is the first foldable phone to actually receive an IP classification for dust resistance. It has an IP52 rating. The first digit denotes protection from dust, and the second denotes water resistance. The Razr Plus can tolerate a small amount of dust infiltration, as well as splashes and maybe light rain, according to its rating. But it can’t handle immersion.

The Z Flip 5 runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chipset and has the newest and quickest processor of the three. Instead, the Razr Plus makes use of the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 from 2016. The Dimensity 9000 Plus chip from Mediatek, which was also introduced last year, is used in the Find N2 Flip.

The Z Flip 5 and Find N2 Flip both offer four years of software updates and operate on Android 13. The Motorola Razr Plus, which offers a three-year warranty, is one year less than the other two smartphones. Similar circumstances apply to security updates, with Samsung and Oppo committing to five years of support and Motorola to four.
